Ultra-processed food is the new cigarette—and it's fueling a global health crisis hiding in plain sight. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Dr. Chris van Tulleken—infectious disease physician, BBC broadcaster, and author of Ultra-Processed People—to expose the truth behind ultra-processed foods and the industries driving their consumption. To find out what this food is really doing to us, Dr. van Tulleken became the first subject in a groundbreaking clinical trial—eating 80% of his calories from ultra-processed food for a full month. We unpack what makes ultra-processed food fundamentally different from real food—even when the ingredients look similar, and why its impact on your brain, metabolism, and long-term health is far worse than anyone thought… You’ll learn:

How ultra-processed food hijacks your brain’s reward system

The science behind food addiction and satiety hormones

Why food labels and front-of-package claims are designed to mislead you

What the latest data says about UPFs and 32 chronic diseases

The global policy movements and lawsuits now underway to fight back

This episode is part science, part exposé, and a wake-up call for anyone who thinks food is just about calories and willpower. If you care about your health, your kids, or the future of our food system, you need to hear this.

The #1 Anti-Aging Tool You’re Ignoring (Hint: It’s Free and Happens at Night)

Sleep is not just a luxury—it’s a foundational pillar of health that influences nearly every aspect of our well-being. Sleep deprivation doesn’t just cause fatigue; it disrupts hormones, drives inflammation, damages metabolism, and accelerates aging. From the gut microbiome to stress hormones like cortisol, sleep is deeply intertwined with brain, immune, and metabolic health. Yet our modern world—filled with late-night screens, ultra-processed foods, and chronic stress—works against quality rest.  In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Matt Walker and Shawn Stevenson, why we need to address sleep as a core health priority to unlock healing, prevention of chronic disease, and renewed vitality. Matthew Walker earned his PhD in neuroscience from the Medical Research Council in the UK, and subsequently became a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is currently a Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of the Center for Human Sleep Science. Are U.S. food companies cutting corners at the expense of your health? Vani Hari, known to many as the Food Babe, thinks so—and she’s spent over a decade sounding the alarm. In this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, she shares why she believes many American products are still made with harmful additives and dyes, even though companies have found ways to remove them in versions sold abroad. In our conversation, she explains:

Why she believes Kellogg’s and other U.S. brands aren’t doing enough to protect American consumers.

The FDA loophole she says allows companies to self-approve food chemicals without oversight.

How food dyes could be contributing to rising rates of behavioral issues in kids.

The labeling gaps and industry tactics she says are keeping consumers in the dark.

How everyday people can push back—and why she believes activism still works.
