Welcome back to The Esthetician Hub. In today’s episode, we’re exploring the world of chemical peels—how they work at a cellular level, how to select the right peel for each skin concern, and what licensed professionals must consider to ensure safe and effective outcomes.

Joining me is Dr. Jennifer Linder, a board-certified dermatologist, renowned educator, and expert in cosmetic chemistry. Dr. Linder is the founder of both PCA Skin and Linder Health, and she previously served as the Chief Medical Officer of PCA Skin. Her contributions to the field of professional skincare have helped shape modern chemical peel formulations and protocols used by estheticians worldwide.

In our discussion, Dr. Linder walks us through exactly what happens beneath the surface of the skin during a chemical peel and why these treatments are so effective for improving texture, tone, and overall skin function. She also explains the unique properties of various acids—such as glycolic, lactic, mandelic, and salicylic—and how to choose the most appropriate one based on the client’s skin type and concerns.

We also cover the difference between superficial, medium, and deep peels, including how to assess which level of depth is suitable in different scenarios. Dr. Linder addresses common misconceptions and fears surrounding peels and offers practical advice on how estheticians can better educate their clients about the safety and science behind modern formulations.

One of the most important topics we discuss is how to safely and effectively treat deeper skin tones, particularly Fitzpatrick types IV–VI. Dr. Linder explains how melanin-rich skin responds differently to chemical peels and what every professional should understand when choosing acids or layering treatments for these clients.
