Join us as Ben, Dessy, Tiago, and Rose cover the inspirations behind Ace Attorney! This episode tackles another iconic and influential detective: Father Brown! We chat about this scrungly little priest who has heard all the deepest darkest secrets from criminals, and now puts that knowledge to use to catch them. And sometimes befriend them! (We all become huge fans of Flambeau basically right away.) As we make our way through the first six stories in this collection, we chat about lapsed Catholics, Amelia Bedelia, beating up police officers on Christmas (as all good socialists would), and how Father Brown always takes note of the service staff when others don't. And yes, we talk about the CLOCKWORK AUTOMATONS.

This excellent introduction to the character is a favorite of ours already, so we're thrilled to rewatch it and talk about it here! We talk about Peter Falk, Jack Cassidy, and how this episode was directed by Steven Spielberg! Hill" and "The Psychological Test." One is the first ever story featuring Ranpo's detective Kogoro Akechi solving a salacious killing, and the other is a howcatchem featuring a scheming university student who thinks he's done the perfect murder - and he also encounters Akechi! We get our first taste of Ranpo's work, discuss how to un-"Boss Baby" ourselves, and talk about our favorite lines and moments from these tales. And of course, we also draw some lines back to Ace Attorney, including one moment from these stories that Shu Takumi lifted entirely for Case 1-2! Find out what it is by listening in!

Today we're starting with one of the classics: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet! We figured our curriculum needed a solid base first, so why not start with the most famous detective of all time? We tackle the character of Holmes, the odd second half of the book, and Watson's immediate fondness for the man. Of course, we also detour into a live drug bust, getting a fine glass of laudanum, misinformation about Van Gogh, and praise for the Great Mouse Detective.

Every Ace Attorney game is now completed, so we take an episode to debrief, catch up, and answer some listener questions, too!
